Lord Krsna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, speaks Bhagavad-gita to His devotee Arjuna. The time: five thousand years ago. The place: India's sacred Kuruksetra plain. Years of persecution and double-dealing by Arjuna's cousins, the Kurus, has led finally to this point, the imminent start of a great war of succession. But when Arjuna sees his friends, relatives, and even his guru poised for battle on the opposing side, his will falters, and he refuses to fight. "0 Krsna," he laments, "now I am confused about my duty and have lost all composure because of weakness. Now I am Your disciple, a soul surrendered unto You. Please instruct me." Then, to His fully surrendered devotee and friend, Krsna speaks the transcendental knowledge of the Gita-knowledge that removes Arjuna's ignorance and that has provided the most profound spiritual guidance for all mankind ever since.
