Evolution — A Doctrine in Search of a Theory

The Darwinian theory of evolution states that species have developed gradually, as illustrated by the branching tree pattern (a). But the fossil record does not substantiate this pattern of development. As a result, some paleontologists have introduced the "punctuated equilibrium" model, shown in (b), in which the transitions between species are officially invisible.
